The British Academy Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTAs) were held on Sunday (February 2) in London. Prince William just so happens to be the royal patron of the BAFTAs, so, he was in attendance at the awards show with Kate Middleton. During the broadcast, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were subjected to a few barbs about the Royal Family. While their reaction shots seemed to show William and Kate having lighthearted reactions to the jokes, however, a new report claims they were actually pretty upset.
According to multiple sources who spoke to Fox News' Neil Sean, “The feedback is that many of the stars stepped out of line in front of the patron, which is the Duke of Cambridge." Host Rebel Wilson “offended the most” by referencing both Prince Andrew and Prince Harry in her opening monologue, saying “It is really great to be here at the Royal Andrew… uh, Royal Harry, no, at this royal palace place." Later that evening, Brad Pitt also made a joke about Harry's decision to step down as a full-time working member of the Royal Family and move to Canada. Unfortunately, Brad was unable to attend to BAFTAs due to "family obligations" so his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood co-star Margot Robbie accepted the award for Best Supporting Actor on his behalf. Reading a statement Brad prepared, Margot said: "He's gonna name this Harry, because he's really excited about bringing it back to the states with him." The cameras then cut to William and Kate for their reactions. While William looked like the grimacing face emoji in a tux, Kate seemed to be laughing. Before exiting the stage, Margot made sure to say the joke were "his words not mine."
According to the Fox News' sources, though, Kate and William's reactions were allegedly edited to seem like they weren't offended by the barbs. “This was not met with the smiling faces that you saw on the final edited version of the show," Sean said. "A mole also told me that to ensure that the royals are not embarrassed or made fun of again at such a prestigious event like this one... they will have a ‘moral clause’ inserted into their acceptance agreement ensuring that due reverence is given to the royal couple who gave their time and support to such a wonderful celebration of film and is respected."
