Live Action ‘Aladdin’ Sequel In The Works

More Aladdin is on the way.

Following the blockbuster success of last summer’s live-action adaptation of the beloved animated classic, Disney is currently developing a sequel to the film with writers John Gatins and Andrea Berloff. According to Variety, the live-action Aladdin sequel is only 6 months into production, however, the writers "have found their path."

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced the original, will also return for the sequel through their Rideback banner, with Ryan Halprin executive producing. Guy Ritchie directed the first installment, however, it remains unclear if he'll return for the follow up. Producers hope to bring Ritchie on board, as well as the original cast, including Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott. Variety reports that official offers won't be until the script is complete.

No other details about the sequel are currently know. Lin spoke with SyFy Wire over the summer, though, and shut down speculation any potential live-action sequel would be based on either of the animated version's straight to VHS sequels. "We get lots of fan letters and people asking us to make Return [of] Jafar, and I can just tell you that we’re in early stages right now, but we’re certainly talking about another movie," Lin explained at the time. "Like with Aladdin, it will not be a straight remake of any movie that’s been made before, so we’re looking at ‘where’s the best way to go with these characters.’ The audience response has really touched us in thinking about where we can go with these stories, and we feel like these characters have more adventures in store/"

Lin also spoke about the producers' desire for Ritchie to return. “He made this movie for his kids. … He certainly loved the experience, I think both he andWill Smith— even before the box office success, they said it was the best filmmaking experience of their lives and they had so much fun doing it. And we’d love to have Guy back and get the team back together. If we do anotherAladdin movie, we’d certainly love to have him at the helm.”
